Kalangala Hosts Two-Day Community Baraza on GBV, Land Crimes, And Refugee Protection
Kalangala Chief Magistrates Court has concluded a two-day community baraza aimed at sensitizing residents of Kalangala Town Council and Kyagalanyi on critical justice and human rights issues. Held under the theme: "Tackling Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Land Crimes, and Refugee Protection," the engagement brought together justice sector actors and community members to strengthen awareness, reporting, and access to justice.
The Baraza focused on equipping communities with knowledge on preventing and responding to GBV, addressing persistent land-related disputes, and safeguarding the rights of vulnerable populations, including refugees. Participants were encouraged to actively engage with justice institutions and utilize available legal mechanisms to resolve disputes and seek redress.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) was represented by ahigh-level delegation that included Mr. Odumbi James Owere, Deputy DPP incharge of International Crimes; Mr. Byansi William, Assistant DPP for Supervision; Dr. Daisy Nabasitu, Assistant DPP for Land Crimes; Ms. SamalieWakooli, Assistant DPP for Children and SGBV; Mr. Maxim Elizoba, Chief State Attorney; Ms. Jackline Okui, Chief State Attorney and Spokesperson of the ODPP; and Mr. Brian Kalinaki, Assistant DPP, Masaka.
HW Alinda Herbert, Senior Magistrate Grade I Kalangala, expressed appreciation to the ODPP for taking the baraza closer to the people. He also commended the International Development Law Organization (IDLO) for supporting and sponsoring the engagement, noting that such partnerships are critical in strengthening access to justice at the community level.
He emphasized that the baraza exists for the benefit of the people and urged members of the public to freely express their concerns, noting that open dialogue is essential to improving criminal justice delivery in Uganda.
Through expert presentations and interactive discussions, the ODPP team provided guidance on prosecution processes, victims' rights, and the importance of timely reporting of offences. Particular emphasis was placed on strengthening collaboration between communities, law enforcement, and prosecution agencies to ensure effective case handling and accountability.
